Sight
Shadow and light, shape and form ...and...color.

For the vast majority of us, the elements of sight form our framework of the world and our present reality.

Visual simulation is, so often, the doorway through to our appreciation of the aesthetic. The pursuit of beauty can be experience through simple lines or elaborate explosions of textures and shapes.

The things we see draw our attention away form ourselves and, if the visuals are skillfully composed, one is carried into the design, into the concept and into the event without conscious effort.
sound
What is the feeling...the spirit that is to be conveyed? Is it the sleek sound of cool jazz, the swell of a string ensemble. Perhaps the right style is the elegance of a solo classical guitar or the the antithesis ...the DJ or full band rocking the house.

Music delights but also can be used to warm the space for the first guest entering the room.

Beyond music one concerns oneself with the sound attenuation in a room. Does the room have hard services bouncing sound back and what does one use in the event space to absorb the unwanted echos.

And most skillfully, sound can be use to enhance the energy of the party by slowly building the sound level and the style of music.
touch
Think touch...think texture. Think of the satisfaction experienced at the feel of crisp linen as you sit to dine. What do you experience the moment you sit? Is it cushy velvet or smooth white leather? Unseen and unheard touch adds something subliminal that can be extremely positive to our expectations and to our enjoyment.

Now what about the mysterious and unknown? What happens as your hand moves along the textures of damask? Touching something unfamiliar can awaken your curiosity...awaken the other senses and bring you more into the moment.

Then there is the memory of touch. Looking at the soft folds of draped fabric, it’s as though you can feel the texture.
smell
Think about the aromas you remember. Consider the soft scent of a lily of the valley, the inviting scents from your mother’s kitchen, from an Asian market, from a great restaurant, aromas that may well linger in your memory for the rest fo your life.

Think of balance. It is of the utmost importance that scents are in harmony and do not compete with each other. Powerfully scented flowers can obscure or confuse the delicacy of fragrance a talented chef has worked hours to create for your table.

Smell can be used thematically and, of course, seasonally. Who doesn’t smile with the scent of fresh evergreen? We have all experienced how a simple smell can trigger our memory, emotions or enjoyment of the moment.
taste
This is what is thrilling about the art of entertaining. Unlike all others, this artistic medium includes the sense of taste.

Two hundred years ago the famous gourmand, Jean Brillat-Savarin, said the following:

“The pleasures of the table are of all times and all ages, of every country and of everyday. They go hand in hand with all our other pleasures, outlast them and, in the end, console us for their lost.”

If great food is the heart of our business, then discerning and eloquent taste is the measure of the pulse.
